LONDON, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Britain “unequivocally condemns” a surprise stroke of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas against Israel on Saturday, said Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.
“The UK unequivocally condemns Hamas’ horrific attacks on Israeli civilians. The UK will always support Israel’s right to defend itself,” Cleverly said in a social media post.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was shocked by the attacks.
“We are in contact with the Israeli authorities and British citizens in Israel should follow travel advice,” Sunak added.
Britain, which outlawed Hamas as a terrorist organization in 2021, already advised against all travel to Gaza and said it would keep its travel advice for Israel updated as events develop.
Cleverly later described the attack as “unprecedented” and said Britain was calling on those involved in the conflict to lay down their arms.
“The images I have seen on social media would indicate that atrocities are being perpetrated throughout southern Israel,” he told reporters.
