British women’s health & wellbeing lags behind those in much of the EU

BRITISH women’s health and wellbeing is trailing those in much of the EU, a study has found.

The UK fared poorly on health procedures such as cancer screening, mental health and maternity care.

In the worldwide study Britain came 37th with a score of 60 out of a possible 100, below the European average of 61.

It dropped seven places in the 2023 Hologic Global Women’s Health Index which ranked nations by access to check-ups, basic needs, personal health and safety, and emotional wellbeing.

Taiwan was top, scoring 72 points, followed by Kuwait, Austria and Germany.

Afghanistan ranked last.

The world average was 54.

Hologic’s Tim Simpson said: “The UK is being leapfrogged by countries making more substantial gains.”

In the study of 79,000 women, 67 per cent in the UK were confident they could get good care, down from 75 per cent in 2020.

Janet Lindsay, from charity Wellbeing of Women, said: “Women’s health research doesn’t get enough funding.”

The Department of Health said: “The Government is delivering a better ­standard of health for women and girls.”
