Britons Wake Up to Smell the Brexit Bacon

Welcome to the Brussels Edition, Bloomberg’s daily briefing on what matters most in the heart of the European Union.

Britain’s bacon-lovers perhaps didn’t realize that a vote to leave the EU would come with reams of red tape and bureaucracy that threaten to curb supplies of the most intrinsic element of a full English brekky — bacon. Cross-border commerce between the UK and its largest trading partner is about to get even harder: After years of delay, London will impose checks on fresh food at the end of this month. The implications are already being felt in Denmark, which supplies rashers for the UK market and is now having to dedicate staff to filling out forms just to export to a country where there once was frictionless trade. Some companies are choosing not to sell to the UK, finding it easier to export their products elsewhere.
