Bruce Lehrmann Drops Defamation Case Over Coverage Of Rape Allegations

A settlement was reached Tuesday and the Federal Court case was dismissed against News Life Media and national politics editor Samantha Maiden.

The two articles at the heart of the lawsuit remain online with an updated editorial note.

“News.com.au notes that a criminal charge of sexual assault was brought against Mr. Lehrmann and later dropped. News.com.au is not suggesting that he was guilty of that charge,” the note said.

News has not made any apologies or corrections.

The media firm will not have to pay Lehrmann any damages under the settlement, but has agreed to pay some of his legal costs.

The law student’s libel cases against Ten, journalist Lisa Wilkinson and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation for their reporting on the Higgins allegations continue.

News Corp will stop printing some of its regional and suburban newspapers as part of a push toward digital.

Higgins accused Lehrmann of raping her inside the Parliamentary office of then-minister Linda Reynolds, for whom they both worked in March 2019.

He denies the accusation and maintains that the couple never had any sexual interaction.
