Bruce Lehrmann’s lawyer ‘angry’ over collusion suggestions

The lawyer for the man accused of raping Brittany Higgins says he was “angry” at suggestions that he colluded with Sen. Linda Reynolds during the trial.

Steven Whybrow told an ACT inquiry into the handling of the Bruce Lehrmann trial that the claims by ACT director of public prosecution Shane Drumgold were “unfair and false”.

“He said these positive things to Linda Reynolds, including that she was trying to tell me how to do my job and give me cross-examination advice, and I was angry. I was angry and wrote this email to him. about what I considered inappropriate conduct,” Whybrow told the inquiry.

Lehrmann was charged with raping Higgins at Parliament House in 2019, though his trial was dropped late last year.

He maintains his innocence.

Last week, Drumgold told the inquiry that he believed ACT police displayed a “passion” to see Lehrmann’s prosecution fail.

But Whybrow said he saw no evidence of that and accused Drumgold of “lack of impartiality”.

“The DPP is not the attorney for the whistleblower, it is supposed to be the target justice minister,” he said.
