There was widespread shock at the announcement on Friday that AmaZulu had sacked coach Benni McCarthy.
The decision was taken while Usuthu are still in the running to reach the CAF Champions League quarter-finals and have seven matches to play in the DStv Premiership.
Whether the move to axe McCarthy proves to be a masterstroke – or a complete shocker – remains to be seen.
So how ‘badly’ did McCarthy perform at the helm to warrant his sacking?
Not badly at all!
In 59 total matches in charge, McCarthy led AmaZulu to 23 wins (39%), 22 draws (37%) and 14 defeats (24%).
That means AmaZulu were undefeated in 76% of matches while McCarthy was in the dugout.
When he took over at the club having left Cape Town City FC, AmaZulu were languishing in 13th place, just above the relegation zone.
AmaZulu secured their first ever CAF Champions League spot
Come the end of the 2020/21 season, AmaZulu finished as runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns and secured their first ever CAF Champions League spot.
He was also named DSTV Premiership Coach of the Year.
Good luck to whoever takes over – you’re going to need it!
