Brits have been urged to look through any old coins for valuable ones worth far more than their face value. An expert listed five specific coins that combined could sell for over £200,000.
A coin’s worth will depend on several factors, such as how rare it is and any unusual marks or errors it might have. Its age can also make it especially sought-after, with coins from specific years attracting the attention of collectors.
In a video uploaded to social media platform TikTok, an expert known as the Coin Collecting Wizard highlighted some old English pennies to keep an eye out for.
Although these coins haven’t been in circulation for many years, they could still be hiding in attics or old coin jars.
The expert said: “Here are some old English pennies that are worth a fortune. You won’t believe some of these values.
“Remember, with these old coins it all depends on condition. But here we go.”
The first coin was minted in 1912. It features an image of Britannia holding a trident on its reverse side (tail side).
To make it especially valuable, it needs to bear a small “H” near the date. He said: “First up is the 1912 with a ‘H’ mint mark to the left of the date.
“These pennies have been known to sell for around £5 in good condition.” Next, he talked about a penny from 1902.
The obverse, or head side, of this coin features King Edward VII. Yet, it’s the reverse that collectors are interested in. While all versions of this coin show Britannia’s image, holding a trident, the ones that command a higher price showcase a low tide at her feet.
“Or how about this penny from 1902?” he said. “If it has a low tide, then its value is £500.”
Then he explained more about the 1950 penny, which due to its low mintage can sell for up to £70. He said: “Here is a 1950 penny, which is a low mintage and sells for around £30 to £70.”
He then moved on to a 1918 penny with an unusual mark. Rather than being produced at the Royal Mint like most coins in the UK, these were created at the King’s Norton Mint in Birmingham.
At the time this company was contracted to help keep up with demand for coins. These coins were marked the letter “KN” to represent this.
“The 1918 penny with a KN mint mark is another scarce coin and in mint condition,” he said. “These have sold for upwards of £600.
“Again, it all depends on condition, remember.” Concluding, he mentioned the most valuable penny coin of them all – the 1933 penny.
Its rarity stems from the fact that only an estimated six or seven were minted by the Royal Mint. The reverse of this precious penny showcases Britannia wielding a trident, while King George V’s portrait is on the other side.
According to the Antiques Trade Gazette, one version of this particular coin sold for $165,000 at auction back in 2016. He added: “And we cannot miss the almighty 1933 penny that is worth £200,000. Yep, that’s right, just for a penny.
“The reason for such a high valuation is only seven are known to exist today. So there you go, just a few of the rare pennies to look out for.”
