Child dies after he was found unresponsive in busy pool on July 4, HCSO says

A 5-year-old died after he was found unresponsive in a busy swimming pool at a northwest Houston apartment complex on the 4th of July, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded shortly after 7 p.m. to the community pool at the Cortland Wortham apartments on Wortham Boulevard, where a patron had found the child after he went underwater, authorities said. His mother and aunt were at another part of the pool, and at least 30 people were in the water at the time, Sgt. Supervisor Sidney Miller told OnScene TV.

EMS was already applying CPR to the 5-year-old when deputies arrived, and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The family members were allegedly not watching him when he went underwater, Miller said. They were later at the hospital, he added.

Most of the 30 people in the pool had left, but officers identified and planned to interview them, Miller said. Authorities were interviewing witnesses, trying to reach building management for surveillance video and working to establish a timeline of the incident, he said.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office would decide if charges would be necessary.
