The Senate’s top Democrat, Chuck Schumer, was urged republicans speak out against a ruling by a “right-wing MAGA judge” in Texas suspending US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of abortion pills or be “complicit” in attacks on women’s health women.
“They are afraid to speak. That’s outrageous,” the Senate Majority Leader told HuffPost during a press call on Saturday. “They are letting the extreme MAGA wing of their party run the whole show. They have an obligation to speak up or are complicit in taking away the reproductive rights of tens of millions of Americans.”
in a unprecedented failure on Friday night, Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk held that the FDA “manipulated and misinterpreted” certain parts of the drug approval process in 2000 to “give the green light to large-scale elective chemical abortions.” The Justice Department immediately filed an appeal directly with the conservative-dominated US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
democrats He said the ruling, if it goes into effect, would endanger the lives of millions of women and further threaten the FDA’s approval process for other drugs that conservatives may find objectionable.
“It is the next big step toward the national abortion ban that Republican elected officials have promised to make law of the United States,” the president said. Joe Biden he said in a statement Friday, adding that the only way to deal with moves like these is to “elect a Congress that passes a law reinstating Roe v. Wade”.
Schumer said the Texas judge, a darling of conservative legal groups, “completely eviscerated the FDA as we know it.” He then asked: “What could come next if some radical fringe group sues, cancer drugs, insulin?”
Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who joined Schumer on the call, said the Texas ruling “didn’t happen by accident.”
“Republicans have meticulously planned every confirmation, every lawsuit, to get us to this point,” he said. “Republicans want to ban abortion everywhere from Seattle to New York.”
Medical abortion has been used for almost 60% of all abortion and miscarriage services in the US More than 100 studies have shown that abortion pills are safe.
At the same time Friday, a federal judge in Washington state issued a ruling in competition that prevented the FDA from removing mifepristone from the market in 17 states and the District of Columbia, where abortion is currently legal. Conflicting rulings by two federal judges will likely result in a US Supreme Court decision.
Few Republican lawmakers have addressed the ruling so far. However, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) said she was “gratefulto the Texas judge for suspending a 23-year-old FDA approval that she said had been “recklessly violating the law.” The Mississippi Republican was one of 13 Republican senators who signed an amicus curiae brief in support of the Texas case that stopped the approval of medical abortion.
There is ample evidence that the continued acceptance of abortion restrictions by the Republican Party, even after the repeal of Roe v. Wade, it has cost them at the polls. In 2022, Republicans won a much smaller than expected majority in the House and failed to win a majority in the Senate after energetic Democratic voters angry over abortion rights flooded the polls.
AND only this week in WisconsinVoters delivered a major rebuke to Republicans over abortion restrictions in a hotly contested state supreme court race that tipped the scales in favor of liberals for the first time in nearly 20 years.
