Customs officials claimed to have seized Rs 303 crore worth of foreign brands of smuggled cigarettes last week during an anti-smuggling campaign launched in all four provinces.
Pakistani customs seized a large quantity of foreign cigarette brands worth Rs 114 crore during separate raids in parts of Balochistan, Dawn reported.
Dawn is a Pakistani newspaper in English. Customs officials claimed to have seized Rs 303 crore worth of foreign brands of smuggled cigarettes last week during an anti-smuggling campaign launched in all four provinces.
A Customs intelligence spokesperson told Dawn: “The largest batch was seized in Balochistan, where Customs recovered 4,280,000 foreign cigarette packs during intelligence-based raids.”
It added that a total of 33,994,850 contraband cigarette cartridges, valued at Rs 1,324 crore, have been seized by customs intelligence in the current fiscal year, according to Dawn.
Meanwhile, Canada recently announced that health warnings will be required to be printed directly on each individual cigarette, making it the first country in the world to do so, CNN reported.
“The new Tobacco Products Appearance, Packaging and Labeling Regulations will be part of the Government of Canada’s continuing efforts to help adult smokers quit, to protect youth and non-tobacco users from addiction to nicotine, and to further reduce the allure of tobacco,” Canadian health officials said in a press release.
According to health officials, individual cigarette labels will make it “virtually impossible” for smokers to escape warnings. (ME TOO)
