After Cincinnati Reds second baseman Jonathan India was hit by a stray ball during batting practice, he was scratched from Monday’s lineup with a left leg contusion.
Early Monday afternoon, India was going through fielding drills close to the Reds’ dugout when a ball ricocheted and hit him. He left the field in pain and hopped to the clubhouse.
Later during pregame warmups, India returned to the field, took batting practice and tested out his leg.
He was scratched about 90 minutes before first pitch. Stuart Fairchild moved up into the leadoff spot, and Bubba Thompson entered the lineup.
This year, India has a .242 batting average and a .783 OPS. He was in Monday’s lineup as the designated hitter, and Santiago Espinal started at second base on Monday. Spencer Steer is the other option at second base on the Reds’ roster.
