POLICE NAB WOULD-BE CIT HEISTS

The action all started on Friday morning when a multidisciplinary team followed up on intelligence of a planned CIT heist.

The large team consisted of the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section, Crime Intelligence Head Office, the South African Police Service Special Task Force.

This also included the Airwing, Gauteng Highway Patrol, Gauteng Saturation Unit. Private security companies such as Tracker, Bad Boyz Security, Falcon Risk Solutions, Insurance Crime Bureau and Vision Tactical Security were also roped in.

The large multidisciplinary team received intelligence on a planned CIT heist, said Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale.

“When the multidisciplinary team arrived at the identified safe house, a shootout ensued wherein two of the suspects escaped on foot.”

But three of the suspects were found in a caravan in a nearby residence. The other two were arrested in the safe house, Mogale said.

Those who escaped on foot however managed to hijack several cars during their escape. They were allegedly heading towards Elukwatini, said Mogale. They were subsequently caught.

But back at the safe house, two other suspects were found hiding in the ceiling. Police also found three different rifles and three vehicles, which turned out to be hijacked cars.

These included a Mercedes Benz C-class that was hijacked in Akasia, Pretoria, last month and a VW Golf 6 GTI which was reported as hijacked in Soshanguve also last month.

A Ford Ranger was also found after it was reported in Krugersdorp in August last year, said Mogale.

“Explosives and large quantities of ammunition were recovered from the scene. The fourth vehicle, a Mercedes Benz CLA is not [positively hijacked] but will be seized for being used in a commission of a crime. This includes also a Toyota Etios.”

ONE OF THE SUSPECTS ALREADY FACING COURT FOR ANOTHER CIT HEIST

Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the arrested suspects is due to appear in court. He is due to appear in Westernburg Magistrate’s Court on an unrelated cash-in-transit heist.

“The total number of arrested suspects is eleven, who will appear in court soon. They face charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a crime, illegal possession of explosives as well as possession of firearms and ammunition,” said Mogale.
