He Commissioner of the National Police General Fannie Masemola will visit the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) this morning to ensure that all security measures are in place to prevent and combat any opportunistic elements of crime during the nationwide EFF lockdown.
AIRPORT PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF ROADS CLOSED
Masemola, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, will be at the airport at 10:00 today, March 19, 2023, to assess the state of preparedness of law enforcement at the airport.

The visit aims to ensure that all necessary security measures are implemented at the airport to prevent and combat opportunistic crime at all ports of entry in the country.
Meanwhile, Airlink said they were aware of the national lockdown on Monday and had taken safety and security measures.

“We prioritize the safety of our customers and will take the necessary precautions. As a security measure, ACSA has reported that the access roads to the terminal will remain temporarily closed as of Sunday, March 19, 2023,” the statement read.

Airlink said they are actively monitoring the situation on the day of the national lockdown and will inform customers of any changes at the airport.
The South African police have indicated that they are leaving nothing to chance and learning lessons from the July 2021 riots. They are planning the nationwide lockdown to ensure the protest is peaceful and takes place without violence, threats or property damage.

Masemola and Mawela will conduct a tour of the OR Tambo airport to assess security and police readiness ahead of the EFf closure tomorrow.
