CNN had to interrupt its live broadcast to announce breaking news about Donald Trump, and it turns out to be positive for the President.
The network reported that Trump’s approval ratings on immigration are surging like a “rocket,” despite the anti-ICE protests that have erupted in Los Angeles. CNN’s lead data reporter Harry Enten highlighted a significant increase in public support for Trump’s immigration policies, which has influenced his decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to LA.
Enten noted that Trump’s net approval rating on immigration has seen a remarkable turnaround since his first term. It’s good news for him, as it has shifted from a negative 21% in 2017 to a positive 1% today.

“This is Trump’s net approval rating on immigration,” Enten told anchor John Berman. “It’s gone up like a rocket now versus eight years ago during Trump’s first term.”
“Trump is begging for a fight on this because he knows what he’s doing so far is working with the American electorate,” Enten continued. “It’s not just on the broad issue of immigration where Trump is doing well – it’s on the specifics.”
The segment then displayed a new CBS News poll that corroborated Enten’s findings. The poll showed 54 percent of the public endorsing Trump’s recent orders for mass deportations.
Enten also shared that 51 percent are in favor of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s activities within local communities. These numbers represent a considerable change from the sentiment during Trump’s initial term in office.
Entern pointed to an Ipsos poll that showed Republican voters holding a 19-point lead over Democrats concerning the issue of immigration. “Americans believe that Democrats just don’t have a clue on immigration,” Enten observed, highlighting that the GOP’s standing on the subject has risen sharply since 2024.
The protests in Los Angeles started on Friday after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers. Protesters blocked a major freeway and set cars on fire over the weekend.
Police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades. Thousands of people have peacefully rallied outside City Hall and hundreds more protested outside a federal complex that includes a detention center where some immigrants are being held following workplace raids.
As the protests continue, so too does immigration enforcement activity across America. City leaders and community groups have reported ICE present at libraries, car washes and Home Depots. School graduations in Los Angeles have increased security over fears of ICE action and some have offered parents the option to watch on Zoom.
