CNN alerted fans to Donald Trump’s arrival in Turkey for a new NATO summit, and many quickly shared concerns over how the meeting would go, noting that they weren’t sure they trusted the president’s motives.

The news network shared the alert on Tuesday, July 7, as the president arrived in Turkey ahead of the planned summit in Ankara, with the meeting of member countries expected to deal with several contentious topics following the conflict in Iran.

However, shortly after viewers slammed him as a “fraud” following the reveal of his $2.2 billion in earnings during the first year of his second term, they quickly expressed concerns about what the meeting would result in.

In addition to expected tense talks over Trump’s criticisms of the alliance and defense spending, Trump is also expected to send a major signal to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

That signal involves the willingness to sell F-35 fighter jets to the country.

However, amid news he was willing to focus on selling jets to the country, many CNN viewers expressed uncertainty that his motives weren’t pure – and that he would cause more strife with other long-standing allies.

“Trump’s heroic struggle with the problems he creates is beginning to border on dangerous tragicomedy and is looking less and less like serious foreign policy,” one person said on X (formerly Twitter).

“Trump indeed has no problem selling his country for personal gain,” another wrote, while a third added, “Meaning at some point, Turkey will use those same jets against the USA.”

“Interesting move. Wondering what conditions or agreements are tied to this potential F-35 deal,” a fourth wondered, while a fifth snarked that it would depend on what Turkey offered Trump, writing, “Only if their ‘gift’ is large enough.”

Others questioned the move because Turkey had previously been kicked out of the F-35 program after an S-400 deal with Russia, saying they feared it would cause chaos.

“Will move considering how rocky the whole S-400 situation was, wonder if they’ll actually pull it off this time. Feels like it’s gonna be a chaotic summit tbh,” one person said.

“Turkey got booted from the F-35 program in 2019 over the S-400 deal with Russia,” another added. “Reversing that now is bold ngl.”

There is a congressional ban on selling jets to Turkey, but Trump signaled after his meeting that he was still considering proceeding with a potential sale, citing that Turkey’s president was more loyal than others who had previously been given planes.

“We have a better relationship with Turkey, and Turkey has been in many ways much more loyal than other countries that we think would be loyal,” he said during his meeting.

“It’s a great plane, it’s the best, currently the best plane by far, and certainly something we will consider.”
