CNN has announced breaking news regarding layoff activity happening under President Donald Trump, with reporter Matt Egan saying ‘layoff announcements skyrocketed’
CNN dropped a bombshell about layoffs under Donald Trump, revealing that in June, U.S. employers reported slashing 47,999 jobs.
This figure represents a significant 49% decrease from May and a slight 2% reduction compared to last June. CNN’s senior reporter Matt Egan attributed these numbers to the latest report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, which keeps tabs on layoff notices.
According to CNN, it’s typical for layoff announcements to slow down in June, often coinciding with the end of some companies’ fiscal years, as historical data from Challenger demonstrates. Egan commented on air, “This report paints a picture of a job market that is holding up better than feared. Layoff announcements skyrocketed earlier this year, but thankfully, they are coming back to earth.”

Challenger has pointed out that the pace of layoff announcements hasn’t been this high since the COVID-19 pandemic and before that, the Great Recession.
Yet, almost 40% of the staggering 744,308 job cuts announced in the first half of 2025 were part of massive reductions carried out under the Department of Government Efficiency initiative, an effort spearheaded by the Trump administration with Elon Musk at the helm.
Earlier in the year, the U.S. saw a wave of layoffs. The Trump administration was instrumental in the termination of tens of thousands of government employees, a decision delivered through a brief amendment to a memo initially distributed just hours following Trump’s swearing-in ceremony.
Trump directed agencies to focus on reducing “all offices that perform functions not mandated by statute or other law.” His campaign began by attempting to prompt voluntary departures through what was called a “fork in the road” program.

The initiative then escalated to the wholesale firing of probationary staff members. This encompassed employees who had been hired, transferred, or promoted during the preceding year.
These actions sparked a demonstration on President’s Day. By April 28, 2025, news network CNN had documented no fewer than 121,361 workers who had either been terminated or were facing potential termination.
The latest news comes after CNN also revealed Trump’s approval ratings are up. The network’s data analyst Harry Enten revealed Trump had scored a whopping 63% approval from Republicans just five months into his current campaign — a full 10 points higher than at the same stage of his last term in 2017.
Enten remarked, “What are we talking about here? It’s history making, it’s history making! So why don’t we look back? We have all the Republican Presidents going back over the last 35, 36, 37 years.”
He added, “Bush 41 had 46%, Bush 43 had 59%, Trump’s first term was 53% – but now it’s 63%! He beats all the other Republicans on the board. And I was looking back even since Reagan – and get this, Donald Trump beat Ronald Reagan when it comes to the strongly approved five months in.
“The bottom line is Donald Trump is making history with the Republican base. He is more beloved by this Republican base than any Republican president five months in.”
