Congress’ Muslim candidates post 80% strike rate in Assam, Kerala – The Tribune

Minority Muslim candidates fielded by the Congress and its alliances in Kerala and Assam have posted an 80 per cent-plus strike rate, data show.

In Assam, the Congress has won 19 seats. Among these, 18 are Muslim faces and one a non-Muslim.

Overall — 18 of the 20 Muslims fielded by the Congress won in Assam and one out of 79 non-Muslims fielded by Congress won.

“The Congress is the new Muslim League,” BJP’s Amit Malviya said citing the data and taking a swipe at the Congress.

Responding to Malviya, Congress’ Supriya Shrinate said the Congress had 664 MLAs across India and of these 520 (78 per cent) are Hindus; and 80 (12 per cent) are Muslims.

In Assam, BJP won 82 seats in a House of 126 — a two-thirds majority with data indicating Hindu consolidation. Counter-consolidation of Muslims also appears to have happened behind the Congress.

Raijor Dal, an allay of the Congress, also won two seats of which one is represented by a minority candidate. So far as Kerala goes, it has returned 35 Muslim minority MLAs in the Assembly of 140.

Of these, 30 are from the Congress-led UDF alliance (eight Congress and all 22 of Congress ally Indian Union Muslim League).

In West Bengal, the Congress has won two seats. On both Muslims faces have won. In Tamil Nadu also, out of two Muslim faces the Congress fielded, one won. In Bengal, the Congress had fielded the highest candidates from the Muslim community — 63, more than the ruling TMC which nominated 47.

Statistics suggest the Muslim vote split in Bengal, becoming one of the major factors behind TMC’s rout. Much of the Muslim vote in Bengal went to the Congress and the Left.
