Cordner man: How Boyd is helping Tedesco and Roosters roll with punches

Roosters captain James Tedesco is reaping the benefits of the club’s decision to include Boyd Cordner in their Queensland bubble, revealing the former Tricolours skipper has played a key role in helping lead the team through its most challenging campaign in recent history.

Tedesco said he was grateful to have had Cordner in his corner every week as the Roosters endured body blow after body blow, with virtually a whole team having been lost to injury and suspension this year.

When Cordner retired earlier this season due to the lingering effects of concussion, he made a point of wanting to remain with the playing group to help out where he could.

Since the move north to Queensland, Cordner’s voice has been heard at training and in video sessions, while he has even helped make up the numbers during opposed sessions without getting involved in any contact.

As Tedesco leads the Roosters into an elimination final against the Gold Coast on Saturday, he told the Herald how lucky he was to have Cordner helping him during his first full season as skipper.

“He’s a voice everyone listens to, he has calming words, wise words, and whenever we have a meeting or before a game, he’s a voice we’ll hear, and when he talks everyone listens,” Tedesco said. “He just has that aura about him. It’s been great to have him around.

“I’ve definitely leaned on him. We’ve been playing golf together, so I always have questions for him. Boyd has always had a lot of trust in me and lets me do my thing, but if I have questions I can always go to him. He’s been awesome.

“I know I can keep growing [as a leader], and that’s the exciting part. With what has happened with the team and the ups and downs we’ve had, my leadership has definitely grown, and you can only hope it keeps getting better.
