It’s been four years since Covid-19 gripped the world and scientists are still uncovering new dimensions of the virus’s impact on health.
While initially recognised as a respiratory illness, emerging evidence suggests that Covid-19 can affect multiple organ systems, including the liver.
Dr Sharad Malhotra, Senior Consultant & HOD, Gastroenterology at Aakash Healthcare in New Delhi, explained, “Covid-19 isn’t limited to the lungs. It can infiltrate liver cells, leading to potential damage.”
Studies have observed elevated liver enzymes in Covid-19 patients, indicating liver injury.
For people with pre-existing liver conditions such as cirrhosis or hepatitis B, Covid-19 poses dual challenges.
“The virus can exacerbate existing liver issues, complicating their management,” said Dr Malhotra.
Covid-19-induced inflammation and immune responses can escalate liver damage, raising mortality risks.
Effects of Covid-19 on liver transplant patients
Liver transplant recipients face unique vulnerabilities, noted Dr Manoj Gupta, Head of Liver Transplant & Surgical Gastroenterology at PSRI Hospital, New Delhi.
“Their weakened immune systems heighten susceptibility to severe Covid-19,” he cautioned.
Studies show increased risks of organ rejection and mortality among liver transplant patients infected with Covid-19.
Moreover, Covid-19’s long-term effects on liver health are a growing concern. Dr Amit Miglani, Director & HOD, Gastroenterology at Asian Hospital, Faridabad, said, “Even in those without prior liver issues, Covid-19 can induce long-term liver damage.”
Chronic inflammation and fibrosis may lead to complications like cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Safeguarding liver health amidst the Covid-19 pandemic is paramount. Close monitoring and tailored treatments for people with liver conditions are essential.
