Coroner responds to crash in Beaver County

Action news 4 at 4 starts now. Right now we bring you *** live look at the Commercial Street Bridge construction site. Pendant says they are on schedule. This is the 3rd full day of their demolition work, and right now we’re kicking off the 1st evening commute under the closure. Sky 4, Pittsburgh’s only news chopper, flying over the city right now. Many drivers testing the numerous detours for the very first time today. We want to thank you for joining us on this afternoon for Pittsburgh’s Action News 44. I’m Mike Clark in for Andrew Stocky, and I’m Kelly Sasso. Months of prep work has led. To this, the planned 25 day closure of the Parkway East is now underway, and that of course is our big story on this Monday. The bridge that stood over Pittsburgh’s Swiss Helm Park neighborhood for decades now looks like it is in ruins. Crews are hard at work demolishing the bridge deck ahead of *** planned blast demolition that will occur at some point later this week. The thousands of drivers who would be using the bridge are now being forced into smaller communities such as Wilkinsburg, Rankin, and Oakland. The morning commute overall appears to have gone smoothly as many people tackle detours for that very first time. And for those who have to get into work, some are now turning to public transportation. Pittsburgh Regional Transit says some of their park and rides were filled to capacity this morning. We have all of those angles, so many stories and more. We have this covered for you from the ground and the air this afternoon as we help you understand what’s happening. And what you can expect in the days ahead. Let’s take another live look at the bridge site. We got our first official update from Pendant on the demolition project process. That’s right. And so many of you have been watching that live stream of the bridge since the road closed officially on Friday night. Pittsburgh’s action news for reporter Yasmin Rodriguez is joining us live at the site in the city’s Swiss Helm Park neighborhood. Yasmin, you heard from Penda today. They tell you they’re pretty pleased so far. Kelly, yeah, that’s right, and that’s something that Pendant officials really wanted to emphasize was that so far everything is going according to schedule. Now Jason Zhang, the Pendant District 11 executive, called the work that’s been done so far extraordinary. So what exactly has been done so far? Like you mentioned, today is only day 3 of that full closure. So since Friday, crews have been working nonstop 12 hour shifts. They’ve been doing things like new drainage and pipes, milling asphalt, removing 1000 ft of expansion. dams at the Edgewood Swissvale Interchange and probably the most important work already done, 60% of the bridge deck has been removed. Once that number hits 100%, that’s when crews can work to demolish the bridge. Pendot also telling us that demolition could happen as early as this week. Of course you can watch that process on their live stream. Now that is something officials really do want to emphasis tonight. They are reminding the public, do not get close and try to view this dangerous demolition. I would anticipate there’s gonna be people trying to trying to sneak in somehow through the woods. Um, there’s gonna be like heat sensing drones in the air, um, they will find you. And once that bridge is demolished, then crews will work to clean up the area and then they say within *** couple of days they can start to slide over that new bridge covering Allegheny County in Swiss Helm Park. It is fantastic to see this, Kelly, and I know the Pendot official and Yasmin just mentioned this morning, he said the bridge deck was about 60%. Well, we were here all morning and we have watched these last four squares quickly go away. I know we are at 80, 85% already with the bridge deck demolition. I can also see out my window, that’s *** big time backups now on the home stretch Gray’s Bridge as you try to make your way through just one of those many, many detours. All right, thanks so much, Sam, and uh certainly *** lot of people watching alongside you. I logged on to that live stream *** few times this weekend. At any given moment there are hundreds of people tuning in just to watch this in real time. It’s so great to see the progress the workers are making, especially in today’s sunshine. We’ve been here in the feed center monitoring the traffic situation from the sky. And from the ground as well, right, and as we know today was really the first big test for the detours as *** lot of people had to go back to work. So we want to bring in Pittsburgh’s news for reporter and the Orio. He’s joining us live here in live drive for and thank you very much. You’ve been testing out some of these detours for us today. Have you run into any issues so far? Well, the key word there, Kelly, is so far, and so far, no. If you take *** look in front of what we’re seeing here, this is along 5th Avenue right before you hit that curve before going on to Boulevard of the Allies and Carlos Flores told us in the morning portion of today how this has kind of been that bottleneck uh for some drivers even though there really wasn’t any major backups and that’s. It’s been the case throughout most of the day. You can see some traffic still going along here, but what you’re seeing in front and what you’re seeing behind us here, there is some buildup of cars here behind us there. But even then, most of the people we talked to said that this is what it looked like in the morning. Once it got past 10:00 a.m., the detour routes from the Edgewood Swissville area starting in Wilkinsburg along Penn Avenue. And then on to 5th here into Oakland. It looked like it would most other days, maybe *** little bit more traffic than usual. It just took over 20 minutes to get down here this morning for us in Live drive 4, and *** lot of people we talked to said the same thing, but this was the time *** lot of drivers were waiting for the commute home when more people are converging onto these more narrow routes such as 5th and 10th. When I am leaving, you know, work for work early in the morning, there is *** little extra, extra traffic going through Forbes Avenue in Murray. Coming in wasn’t bad, but going home is going to be worse because then everybody’s converging. And so you can see this, we’re getting on *** boulevard of the allies right now and this is what *** lot of people were taking this morning and so we’re gonna turn ourselves around and get ready to go back up towards Wilkinsburg. We’re gonna take Forbes on to 5th and then on to Penn. So, right now what the map is telling us, it’s gonna take us more extra time, the GPS I mean, so we’re gonna keep you posted, so be sure to check back in with us here at 4:30 to show you how the commute back from work is gonna look as well. Now we know one way people are avoiding the detours is by using public transportation. PRT is expecting *** lot of new riders who have to get into town, but want to avoid the potential traffic mess. Pittsburgh’s actually News for reporter Marcy Cipriani continues our live team coverage in Swissville this afternoon. Marcy, *** lot of people are using the park and ride. Yes, Mike, in fact, this Swiss Vale Park and ride was at full capacity this morning, and PRT tells me that is not typical of *** Monday. And we did find people here boarding buses to get around that closure, so we boarded as well. In fact, we boarded the P1 from. Swissville into downtown just before noon, so it was definitely *** little lighter time to travel and while the bus was busy, it wasn’t full and we found riders who adjusted their schedule for that purpose, anticipating the commercial street parkway closure would make their commute tough. It’s inconvenient right now, but in the long run, I’m sure it’ll be *** lot faster. Won’t be like heavy traffic coming from. So Marcy, you said you took the P1 downtown. What was that like? Well, Kelly, actually we had no issues at all. We moved along downtown with no problem at all, but remember when these buses hit the east corridor, they have that dedicated section that is for buses only, so you get no traffic even if there is traffic. Right now we want to turn to Pittsburgh’s action weather with *** live look over downtown, kicking off another really hot week in Pittsburgh. Allegheny County just ordered *** code red heat advisory that will take effect tomorrow. Will run straight through Thursday. In fact, the city is opening its cooling centers as well. We have Chief Meteorologist Mike Harvey in today for Brian. He’s joining us now with *** look at the forecast. So Mike, it sounds like things are really going to be heating up this week. Definitely going to feel like summer out there as we go through the rest of the week as we’ll have high temperatures that will be hitting the 90s as we go through the, uh, next, uh, really 4 days. Taking *** look outside, 85 degrees. Our current. Temperature feels like 86 and as we go into tomorrow we’ll have temperatures that will move right on into the nineties. That’ll be our first day in the nineties and it’ll feel like the upper 90s on Tuesday. Taking *** look outside, future cast, mostly clear skies. That is also going to be what we’ll be seeing as we go through the week. Sunshine straight on through. Your high temperatures for tomorrow, 92 in Pittsburgh, 94 in Newcastle. 91 in Indiana. Also 91 in Washington and Waynesburg. And as we head through the rest of the week, *** bunch of 90s, 92 on Tuesday, then up to 94 heat index for what it’s going to feel like near 100 degrees on Wednesday. It’s an impact day. We keep it in the low 90s on Thursday as well as Friday. Then as we head into the weekend, temperatures will drop off, but that’s because we will have some rain showers that will be returning to the area. All right, thank you, Mike. *** large house in Allegheny County is swarmed by first responders after *** fire breaks out inside. Sky 4 giving us *** look at the scene this morning along Chestnut Road in Edgeworth. Still no word this afternoon on the cause of the fire, but we’re still working to find out if anyone was home when it started. Also want to take you to Claritin now. That’s where *** double shooting is being investigated. Allegheny County police tell us *** woman was shot and killed, and *** man was shot and rushed. To the hospital. As of right now, no arrests have been made. Police have not shared any additional information about what they think led up to the shooting. An assault on the North Shore leads to *** standoff several miles away in Sharpsburg. We’re told it unfolded this morning at *** home along 13th Street. Police say it stemmed from an alleged assault that happened near Shorty’s. We’re being told the man was taken into custody. His name has not been released. We’ll bring more as we learn more about this case. And now to the breaking news out of Maine. Another deadly shooting involving an ICE agent. This incident quickly drew protests. Our sister station is in the town of Biddeford with where this investigation stands. This quiet side street here in Biddeford, Maine is just *** few blocks up from the scene of *** fatal ICE-involved shooting. It’s where media was originally asked to gather for *** potential press conference, but we have yet to get any information from officials. The only word we’ve gotten is from the city of Biddeford to say they have no further updates and all inquiries should be directed to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. We still haven’t heard from ICE or the. FBI, but Maine Senator Angus King shared this afternoon that he spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen, and according to DHS, the man killed was given an order to leave the country and that he weaponized his vehicle this morning. There are still many unanswered questions about this shooting, who the victim is, and how the investigation will be handled. We will, of course, continue to press officials for those details, but for now, reporting in Biddeford, Maine, I’m Jamie Ala.
