COVID-19 latest: 88 new deaths as cases increase to 73 533

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced that as of Monday 15 June, South Africa has 73 533 confirmed COVID-19 cases, an increase of 3 495 since the last report on Sunday.

He also announced the deaths of a further 88 people due to the rapidly spreading virus, bringing the total number of South Africans who have died to 1 568.

In the last 24-hours, 1 148 933 tests were completed, with 26 975 tests conducted overall. On a positive note, 39 867 people have successfully recovered from the virus.

Provincial COVID-19 cases:

The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Monday 15 June: 

  • Gauteng – 12 193 cases;
  • Western Cape – 44 143 cases
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 3 959cases
  • Free State –  512 cases
  • Eastern Cape –  10 597 cases
  • Limpopo –  362 cases
  • Mpumalanga –  322 cases
  • North West –  1 177 cases
  • Northern Cape – 205 cases; and  
  • Unknown –  63 cases
