Daily COVID-19 case numbers in New South Wales is “highly likely” to reach well into the 2000s, a leading doctor says.

The prediction was made after modelling released by the state government shows NSW could hit up to 2000 cases a day, with 3000 in hospital and 1000 in ICU.

The state recorded 1,281 coronavirus cases yesterday with 1,071 hospitalisations. Of those, 177 people have been admitted into intensive care.

Speaking to Today, infectious disease paediatrician Robert Booy said infections will keep increasing until “the middle and second half of October”.

“They’re on the rise and they haven’t stopped rising,” he said.”Getting up to 2000, 2500 (a day) is is certainly highly likely.

“It will take a few weeks and it will turn around through the middle and second half of October.”
