Crews extinguish fire at Redwood City metal recycling center

A plume of thick, dark smoke could be seen for miles Wednesday due to a fire in Redwood City.

The blaze was reported at 3 p.m. after a pile of scrap caught fire at Sims Metal, a metal recycling center located at 699 Seaport Boulevard.

Aerial coverage from NBC Bay Area’s SkyRanger showed large piles of scrap on fire in a business yard. Emergency crews were seen working to put out the blaze.

Smoke from the blaze also drifted into parts of Santa Clara County, prompting authorities to put out a smoke advisory in the area.

“Those who are sensitive to smoke should remain indoors if possible,” the Santa Clara County Fire Department said in a post on X.

At 5 p.m., firefighters reported they had the fire under control.

Once the fire is fully extinguished, an investigator will take over to determine the cause. The cause of the fire did not appear to be suspicious, firefighters said.

There have been no reported injuries.
