The district crime branch took over the investigation into the murder of a young doctor here recently by a patient he was treating, police said Friday. Dr. Vandana Das, an internal surgeon at Azeezia Medical College Hospital, worked at Kottarakkara taluk hospital as part of her training. She was stabbed to death by a man brought there by police in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
“The District Crime Division will investigate the matter now,” a senior district police official told PTI. The defendant, G Sandeep, a school teacher by profession, is currently in court custody.
He was taken to hospital by police for treatment of a leg injury. The police took him there after he dialed the emergency number 112, claiming that his life was in danger. When the local police located him, he was away from his home, surrounded by neighbors and relatives, and he had a leg wound and a stick in his hand.
He was taken to the hospital accompanied by his brother-in-law and the leader of a local political party. During the bandaging of his wound, he became violent, initially stabbing the politician and the police there and then repeatedly stabbing Das as well, who was unable to escape to safety. Das, who suffered serious injuries in the attack, died a few hours after the incident. The murder of the young doctor generated furor in the state, after which the government decided to issue an ordinance to modify the hospital protection law.
