Currie Cup roundup: Griquas return topples sharks, cheetahs pummel griffins

The Cheetahs and Griquas pulled off epic wins over the Griffons and Sharks in the second round of the Currie Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The Sharks came into this clash as favorites to win this game and for the first half, they were in the money.

The visitors opened up a commendable 28-10 lead before the break, thanks to converted tries from Francois Venter, Fez Mbatha, Cameron Wright and Yaw Penxe.

But the tide turned in the second half when Griquas mounted a monumental comeback by scoring five unanswered tries (38 points) to lead 48-28 on the scoreboard.

The shell-shocked Sharks finally snapped out of their long period of late-game stasis and managed to cross for two more tries, but by then the damage was done and their chances of winning were already gone.

CHEETAHS COMPLETE CURRIE CUP ROUTE

The Cheetahs put on a dazzling display of attacking rugby en route to a thumping 52-12 win over the Griffons in Bloemfontein.

The star of the game was Munier Hartzenberg, who scored a whopping four tries for the winning team, which climbed back to first place in the rankings after accumulating maximum record points from their first two Currie Cup games.

The hosts led 40-6 at half time and although the action faded a bit in the second half, they managed to outscore the visiting team 12 points to six to complete the demolition job.
