Daniel Dubois stands to hand over more than £600,000 to the taxman following his spectacular triumph against Fabio Wardley on Saturday night.
The 28-year-old heavyweight claimed the WBO belt after stopping his opponent in the 11th round at Manchester’s Co-Op Live arena.
This victory marks Dubois’ third world title, adding to the WBA (Regular) and IBF championships he has previously captured.
Reports suggest the British fighter earned approximately £1.3million for the contest, though a substantial portion of that sum will never reach his bank account.
The UK’s tax system means high earners face significant deductions, with Dubois set to lose a considerable chunk of his purse to HMRC.
Those earning above £125,140 annually in Britain are subject to a 45 per cent additional rate of taxation.
Applied to Dubois’ reported purse, this translates to roughly £585,000 being directed straight to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

On top of this, the champion faces a two per cent National Insurance contribution amounting to approximately £26,000.
Combined, these deductions total a staggering £611,000 from his fight earnings.
If the purse figures are accurate, Dubois would retain around £689,000 from the bout.

Yet even this reduced sum will shrink further, as boxers traditionally share a percentage of their earnings with their training team, corner staff and gym facilities.
Reflecting on the brutal encounter, Dubois acknowledged the gruelling nature of the contest.
“It was a war. We come through the sticky moments. It was a war. Thank you, Fabio, for that. Thank you,” he said.
Looking ahead, the newly crowned WBO champion expressed his determination to build on this success.
“I want to grow from this fight, improve and come back even better and go on a reign as champion again,” Dubois declared.
Promoter Frank Warren was effusive in his praise for both competitors.

“It was amazing. These two guys show such heart – both of them,” he remarked.
“Great heart, chins, it was an amazing fight. It was just absorbing, it had everything. Exciting. Best heavyweight fight I’ve ever put on.”
Dubois now faces several potential paths forward in his career.
The fight contract includes a rematch clause with Wardley, though Warren offered few details about the champion’s immediate plans.
A third meeting with undefeated Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk remains an enticing prospect, despite Dubois suffering two losses to the 39-year-old.
Their first encounter in August 2023 ended with Usyk stopping the Briton in round nine, while their Wembley rematch last July saw Dubois knocked out in the fifth.
