Aldi has confirmed that every one of its UK stores will shut for three key days this festive season, giving staff extra time off over Christmas and New Year. The discount supermarket chain, which operates more than 1,050 branches across Britain, will close its doors on Christmas Day (December 25), Boxing Day (December 26), and New Year’s Day (January 1, 2026).
That means shoppers will be unable to visit Aldi on December 25 and 26, with stores reopening on Saturday, December 27. After trading as normal in the days leading up to New Year’s Eve, branches will then close again on January 1, before returning to regular hours on Friday, January 2.
The move is expected to impact millions of festive shoppers who typically rely on last-minute supermarket runs for forgotten ingredients, Boxing Day deals, or household essentials.
Aldi is urging families to plan ahead and stock up early, as all stores will close after trading finishes on Christmas Eve.
To support customers, Aldi has promised extended opening hours in the run-up to Christmas, though times will vary by location. Shoppers are advised to check their local branch details online before travelling.
Rebecca Heley, Aldi UK’s communications director, said: “Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones.
“That’s why all Aldi stores will be closed on Boxing Day this year. We know how hard colleagues work to deliver an amazing Christmas for our customers, and this is one small way of saying thank you.”
The closures reflect Aldi’s long-standing policy of prioritising staff welfare over maximising festive trading. Retail experts suggest the decision will be welcomed by employees, who face intense workloads throughout December as demand for food, drink, and seasonal goods peaks.
Aldi is not alone in making the move. Home Bargains has also confirmed a three-day festive closure, while B&M will shut only on Christmas Day before reopening on Boxing Day.
The trend points to a broader shift in UK retail, with more chains recognising the value of giving staff uninterrupted time with family over the holidays.
For Aldi, Britain’s fourth-largest supermarket, the decision reinforces its commitment to employee wellbeing — a gesture that may also help strengthen customer loyalty in the long run.
