Rep. Jamal Bowman (D-N.Y.) activated the fire alarm in a House of Representatives building on Saturday amid chaotic and tense negotiations on Capitol Hill to avoid a government shutdown.
Bowman was caught on camera setting off the alarm at the Cannon House building just as House Democrats were buying time to review a new Republican proposal to keep the government open.
Bowman’s chief of staff, Sarah Iddrissu, later tweeted that it was an accident.
It’s unclear what setting off a fire alarm could be an accident.
Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), chairman of the House Administration Committee, tweeted that the committee is investigating what happened.
Requests for comment from the US Capitol Police and Bowman’s office were not immediately returned.
