Disgraced NSW MP Michael Johnson resigns

Upper Hunter Nationals MP Michael Johnsen.

Disgraced NSW MP Michael Johnsen has resigned, just days after it was revealed he allegedly texted a sex worker during Question Time, offering her $1000 to come to Parliament House.

The ABC this week obtained a string of text messages between the Upper Hunter Nationals MP and the unnamed sex worker, which show he offered to pay her $1000 to come to parliament and sent her a video of himself performing a lewd act.

Mr Johnson was also accused of sexually assaulting the sex worker in the Blue Mountains.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro, who had been calling for Mr Johnson to step down, confirmed the resignation on Wednesday.

Mr Johnson was removed from the Nationals and Coalition Party Rooms last week and an active police investigation is underway.

“Today I welcome Mr Johnsen’s resignation from the NSW Parliament,” Mr Barilaro said in a statement.

“My message to the people of the Upper Hunter is I will always put integrity before politics.

“I want to say to the communities of the Upper Hunter that I am sorry, but please be assured the NSW Nationals’ focus has always been, and will always be, on delivering for the Upper Hunter and keeping our communities safe and secure.”

More to come.
