Dominion Voting Systems’ lead attorney spoke Tuesday about the company’s decision to reach a last-minute settlement with foxnews in the widely anticipated defamation lawsuit involving some of the right-wing network’s 2020 election coverage.
Justin Nelson said that while Dominion felt vindicated for holding Fox News accountable for its lies, the $787.5 million settlement it also felt “bittersweet”.
In a statement, the network also acknowledged “the Court’s rulings that found certain claims about Dominion to be false.”
The lawsuit centered on unsubstantiated claims that Dominion used its voting equipment to somehow shift the former president’s votes. donald trump to Joe Bidenthereby interfering with the outcome of the 2020 election. Dominion claims that Fox News’ broadcast of those falsehoods resulted in threats against its employees and lost profits.
But the settlement does not appear to require Fox News hosts to tell their viewers about those on-air lies.
The agreement also means that prominent hosts, such as Tucker Carlson, and high-profile people in the network, including Fox founder Rupert Murdoch, will not testify publicly, thus avoiding what is likely to be an embarrassing spectacle.
“Of course we would have liked to see the hosts take the stage and others,” Nelson told MSNBC’s “The ReidOut”. “But at the end of the day, what really mattered to us was that responsibility, and today we believe we achieved it.”
When asked about the potential missed opportunity for Fox News to tell its viewers about the lies it spread, Nelson ultimately said: “You can’t hide from paying almost $800 million and having that in a public settlement.” .
“The civil litigation system can’t do much,” Nelson continued.
Nelson said the company succeeded in the goals it set for this legal challenge: to obtain that liability and some recompense for the damage the company suffered from Fox’s lies.
Court filings in recent months has also appeared damaging to Fox News, revealing that top network executives, including Murdoch himselfexpressed doubts about Trump’s claims of voter fraud.
Nelson added that this is not the end of the road for Dominion, as it currently has six additional lawsuits against Fox.
“We are not going to stop here,” he said.
Fox News is also facing a separate lawsuit of $2.7 billion of Smartmatic USA Corp.
