Doyle strikes late to lead Sheffield United into the FA Cup semi-final

Sheffield United came from behind twice to beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 in an entertaining FA Men’s Cup quarter-final after Tommy Doyle’s superb 91st-minute goal on Sunday booked a trip to Wembley.

With the score 2-2 in added time, Doyle fired a shot from 25 yards that crashed into the top corner and goalkeeper Aynsley Pears was unable to deflect the ball despite laying a hand on it.

In a duel between two second division teams vying for promotion to the Premier League, Blackburn took the lead in the 21st minute when they received a penalty for Jack Robinson’s handball following a VAR check, which was converted by Ben Brereton.

Blackburn’s Sam Gallagher then scored an own goal seven minutes later after Max Lowe’s long-range shot deflected off the striker’s knee and into the corner of the net.

Gallagher amended the time the offside trap was sprung to put Sammie Szmodics in the middle as the midfielder restored Blackburn’s lead by shooting low past goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.

United striker Oli McBurnie produced a moment of magic in the 81st when he spun around one defender in the box, past another and slipped the ball past Pears to make it 2-2 before Doyle, on loan from Manchester City, scored his last winning goal. .

In the other men’s quarters of the day, top-tier Brighton were playing fourth-tier Grimsby and Manchester United were playing Fulham in a Premier League clash.

In the women’s quarter-final Manchester United were too good for Lewes, beating the Championship team 3-1, a scoreline that could have been much worse for the home team had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping from Sophie Whitehouse.
