A 62-year-old driver has been arrested over a four-car crash that left a two-year-old girl dead.
In an update on Thursday, police said the man was under guard in hospital where he remains in a stable condition.
Police said they are also searching for the driver of a dark-coloured Tesla who may be able to provide crucial dashcam footage of the incident as they try to piece together what happened.
“There is no suggestion this vehicle was involved in any offending and is simply a potential witness to the collision,” police said in a statement.
The little girl was travelling in a car with four others when the crash unfolded on Dynon Road, West Melbourne around 4.30pm on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old driver of that car remains in a serious condition in the Royal Melbourne Hospital, along with his 30-year-old female passenger who is stable.
A four-year-old boy and an 11-month-old boy were taken to the Royal Childrens’ Hospital, the latter with serious lower body injuries. The two-year-old girl died at the scene.
Authorities closed Dynon Road in both directions for several hours while responding to the crash.
The drivers were the only occupants of the other three vehicles involved, and while the arrested man is still in hospital the other two drivers – a man and a woman – were treated at the scene.
The two-year-old is among three people to die on Victorian roads in less than 24 hours.
Just after 2am on Wednesday, a 26-year-old Craigieburn man was discovered dead on the Hume Freeway in Wallan. On Thursday, a woman in her seventies was killed when her car flipped onto its roof on Lane Road in Katandra West.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed or has dashcam footage of any of the three crashes to contact Crime Stoppers.
Victoria’s road toll is now at 117 for 2026, down 19 per cent on the previous year and below the five-year average.
