Eastern Cape premier reinstates Dalindyebo to the kingdom

Acting AbaThembu King Azenathi Dalindyebo may soon find himself homeless as he has been removed from the throne, effective immediately by the Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane.

State-issued resources to be returned

In a letter supposedly from the provincial government, Azenathi has been ordered to vacate the Bumbane Great Place palace and also leave behind some of royal perks, including state-issued cellphones, a vehicle and petrol cards.

“All government support resources, namely motor vehicle, fuel cards and cellphones are expected to be collected from Azenathi by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) officials”, the one-page letter read in part.

Mabuyane goes on to remind the royal that his acting period came to an end on 8 February 2020 and that his last salary had been drawn on Monday, 15 June 2020.

The decision to give Azenathi his marching orders comes merely a week after a gathering of royals had concluded that he permanently replace his father, Buyelekhaya.

The King was incarcerated for an effective 12-year jail term in 2015 following the striking down of his marathon attempt for an appeal by the Supreme Court of Appeal.  He had been convicted in 2009 for offences that included kidnapping, assault, and defeating the ends of justice.

Paternity drama

It appears there is no love lost between the two, who had been the subject of a paternity scandal when Buyelekhaya claimed he was not Azenathi’s biological son – a primary basis for an earlier bid to have him removed from the throne.

Back in May, City Press cited messages Dalindyebo sent to Azenathi and his mother Judge Buyiswa Majiki, in which he asks them to leave the residence as they are not legitimate royals.

“I humble myself requesting you to take your son and his belongings together with yours and vacate my premises before the end of this month. I need to occupy my home as soon as possible“, reads the message Dalindyebo sent to Majiki, also his former wife.

Dalindyebo’s axe attack on family

King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo’s fiery temper knows no boundaries, widely evident in an alleged violent attack he launched on Azenathi and his family, just months after his December 2019 prison release.

He was later arrested before being released on a warning.
