Egypt began vaccinating people with chronic diseases and the elderly, Reuters reported Thursday. More than 150,000 people have signed up to receive the vaccination since Sunday, according to the outlet.
The Egyptian government started administering COVID-19 vaccines to medical workers in January. Last week, the Health Ministry launched a website for citizens to register to receive their doses. The ministry sends them a time and location for their vaccination following the registration. The vaccine was free for medical staff, but costs $13 (200 Egyptian pounds) for others, the state-owned Al-Ahram news outlet reported.
In December, Egypt received 350,000 doses of China’s Sinopharm and then 50,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine last month, Reuters said. Both vaccines require two doses to be fully effective. Egypt has a population of more than 100 million.
Egypt reported 577 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday, bringing the total number of people who have been recorded as having virus to 184,168. A total of 10,822 people have died, including 44 reported Wednesday, Al-Ahram said.
