Election Results 2024 LIVE Updates: ‘400 paar’ a distant dream as NDA wins 293

The BJP won all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi for the third consecutive time, dashing the hopes of the AAP-Congress alliance. The BJP candidates in Delhi Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Praveen Khandelwal, Bansuri Swaraj, Harsh Malhotra, Manoj Tiwari, Kamaljeet Sehrawat and Yogender Chandoliya were declared winners with a margin of 1,24,333, 89,325 votes, 78,000, 93,663, 1,38,778 lakh, 1,99,013 lakh and 2,90,849 votes respectively.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP faced a significant challenge from the INDIA bloc, led by the Samajwadi Party, which won 37 seats. The Samajwadi Party reduced the BJP’s count to 35 from 62 seats in 2019.

The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) secured 29 seats, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured 22 seats, and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) secured 16 seats, according to the Election Commission of India.

The Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, which Rahul Gandhi won for the second time in a row, comprises three assembly constituencies each in the tribal district of Wayanad and the Muslim-dominated Malappuram, as well as one in the Kozhikode district, where Christians hold a significant vote base. Gandhi romped him with a margin of over 3.64 lakh votes against his nearest rival, Annie Raja of the CPI.

With the Congress scion winning handsomely from Rae Bareli as well, questions remain about which constituency he will now forego. However, he has said he has not decided on which seat he will represent in the Lok Sabha. 

In his remarks, after most of the results came in the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the BJP-led NDA would form its third successive government and that it was the victory of the resolve of Viksit Bharat, of ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas’, and of the strong faith of people in India’s Constitution.

PM Modi said at the party’s central office that it is the first time since 1962 that a government that completed two full terms has gotten a third successive term. He said “new history” has been created after six decades.

PM Modi also said that despite the opposition parties’ coming together, their combined number was less than the BJP’s tally.

In the Lok Sabha Elections 2019, pollsters had predicted around 285 seats for the NDA. And in reality the NDA bagged 353 seats, of which the BJP got 303 alone. The Opposition’s UPA managed only 93 seats of which the Congress got 52. In the Lok Sabha Elections 2014, the NDA was estimated to win around 257-340 seats. However, the NDA won 336 seats and Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister for the first time.

While most exit polls predicted a smooth victory for PM Modi’s NDA with over 350 seats, at least three major exit polls—India Today-My Axis India, India TV-CNX, and News24-Todays Chanakya—have predicted 400 plus seats for the ruling coalition in general elections.

Hailing the Lok Sabha election results in 2024, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday thanked the people of Wayanad and Raebareli for making him win with a huge majority and said that the people have saved the Constitution and democracy in the country.

“Thank you very much to the people of Wayanad and Raebareli for giving me immense support and making me win with a huge majority. If it were in my control, I would have liked to remain an MP from both places,” said Rahul Gandhi while addressing a press conference in the national capital on Tuesday.

Congress leader Sachin Pilot claimed that the public didn’t like the BJP’s narrative of “Mandir-Masjid”, “Hindu-Muslim”.

“The states in which the BJP expected to increase its numbers, like West Bengal, Haryana and Rajasthan, the people have rejected them there… The issues we brought up were liked by the people. Our narrative was optimistic, but BJP’s narrative was Mandir-Masjid, Hindu-Muslim, and Mangalsutra. The people may not have liked it… Who would have taken the credit if they (BJP) had gone above 400?… Those who wanted the credit must accept that the public did not give them their expected mandate,” said Pilot while talking to ANI.

The BJP faced setbacks in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, struggled in the south, and saw limited success in West Bengal. However, it triumphed in Odisha, winning 20 out of 21 seats, with Congress securing the remaining seat and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) failing to win any. The BJP’s tally of 240 seats marks a decrease from previous elections, while Congress increased its count from 52 seats in 2019 to 99 in 2024.

The final count for the Lok Sabha 2024 elections has concluded, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 240 seats, far fewer than had been expected, however, prevailing over the Opposition, Congress, which won 99 seats. For the first time, since the Bharatiya Janata Party swept to power in 2014, it did not secure a majority on its own.
