Elon Musk Says Inactive Twitter Accounts Are Being Removed

Elon Musk announced Monday that Twitter is terminating accounts that have not been used for a long time.

The move comes as Musk tries to increase engagement and earning opportunities on the online platform he bought for $44 billion last year.

“We are purging accounts that have not had any activity for several years, so you will likely see a drop in follower count,” Musk said in a tweet.

Changes demanded by Musk at Twitter, from cutting staff to removing free verification checkmarks seen as seals of authenticity, have alienated users and advertisers.

Twitter’s blue ticks were reinstated on some media, celebrity and other high-profile accounts in late April, a move protested by many of the recipients.

Musk tweeted at the time that he was “paying for some (subscriptions) personally.”

Many official media accounts picked up a tick, including AFP, which has not subscribed to Twitter Blue.

The restored ticks did not attract US public radio NPR again, which in mid-April suspended activity on its accounts.

The broadcaster was among those who protested the “state-affiliated” and “government-funded” labels Twitter assigned them, which were previously reserved for non-independent media outlets funded by autocratic governments.

Since Musk bought Twitter, the company has relaxed content moderation on the network, leaving behind many users banned for messages that incite hate or spread misinformation.

Market trackers say Twitter’s revenue has fallen as advertisers avoid the platform.
