July 23 (Reuters) – Elon Musk said on Sunday he was looking to change the Twitter logo, tweeting: “And soon we will say goodbye to the Twitter brand and gradually to all the birds.”
In a post to the site at 12:06 am ET (0406 GMT), the billionaire owner of the social media platform added: “If a good enough X logo goes live tonight, we’ll go global tomorrow.”
Musk posted an image of a blinking “X” and then in a Twitter Spaces audio chat responded “Yes” when asked if he would change the Twitter logo, adding that it “should have been done a long time ago.”
Under Musk’s tumultuous tenure since he bought Twitter in October, the company changed its business name to X Corp, reflecting the billionaire’s vision of creating a “super applike China’s WeChat.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Twitter’s website says its logo, which depicts a blue bird, is “our most recognizable asset.” “That’s why we protect it so much,” he added.
The bird was temporarily replaced in April by Dogecoin Shiba Inu dog, helping fuel an increase in the market value of the meme coin.
The company came under widespread criticism from users and marketers when Musk announced earlier this month that Twitter would limit how many tweets per day can be read by multiple accounts.
The daily limits helped the growth of rival Meta-owned Threads service, which crossed 100 million registrations within five days of launch.
Twitter’s latest complication was a lawsuit filed Tuesday alleging the company must at least $500 million in severance pay for former employees. Since Musk acquired it, the company has laid off more than half of its workforce to cut costs.
