Elton Jantjies set to bid farewell to Lions and join former coach in Japan

Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies could be on his way to Japanese side the NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes before the end of 2021.

Elton Jantjies was somewhat surprisingly released from his Lions contract prior to the ongoing Rainbow Cup SA tournament in order to join French side Pau as a medical joker.

At this stage he is expected to return to the Lions after the French Top 14 concludes, but then is reportedly set to head for Japan and link up once again with former Lions coach Johan Ackermann.

According to a report on Netwerk24, Jantjies’ Docomo Red Hurricanes contract which will come into effect later this year.

Ackermann was Jantjies’ Lions coach during the union’s local dominance between 2016 and 2018 when they reached three consecutive Super Rugby finals.

Jantjies, now 30, has played 37 Tests for the Springboks.

At this stage he is still expected to play a part in the British & Irish Lions series.
