Eric Trump has demanded investigators finally solve the mystery behind the reclusive lone gunman who tried to assassinate his father at a Pennsylvania rally last year. The president’s son said ‘nothing about it looks right’ while discussing the probe of Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, who made a July 2024 attempt on Trump’s life at a Butler rally. ‘We know nothing. In fact, not only am I unsatisfied, I’m wholly [expletive] off about it, and I remain [expletive] off about it,’ Trump told The New York Post when asked if he was satisfied with the investigation.
Trump, 41, questioned the lack of openly available information about the shooter. Crooks has little-to-no online paper trail and no known potential associates. ‘We see a picture of a kid who looks like he’s 14 years old, and we’ve seen no other pictures of him. We don’t know who he is,’ he said. Trump also pointed out that it is known Crooks has ‘multiple cellphones’ and wondered why Crooks was cremated within a week of his death after police fired back at him. ‘The kid was cremated in like 5 days or 6 days. Like, give me a break. Like, most family pets take longer to be cremated.’
‘I’m very far away from being a conspiracy theorist, but nothing about it looks right.’ He noted that the FBI has taken over the investigation but said he has not asked Director Kash Patel or Deputy Director Dan Bongino about it and says he has ‘no idea’ what’s holding things up. ‘I’m a guy who’s not satisfied. I think it’s a joke that we don’t know.’ The Daily Mail has reached out to the FBI and the White House for comment. Crooks opened fire at Trump, who was then the presumptive Republican Party nominee for the presidential election , on July 13, 2024.
He struck Trump in the ear while a stray bullet killed audience member Corey Comperatore, 50, who was a father-of-two and former fire chief. Crooks, who was shot dead by Secret Service snipers at the Trump rally, was a registered Republican who had only graduated from high school two years before the shooting. Records show, however, that he donated to a group who backed President Joe Biden on the day of the inauguration in 2020. He worked as a dietary aide at Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he provided food and care for post-hospital elderly and sick people.
His employer confirmed on Sunday that he had a clean background check and ‘performed his job without concern’ before he turned up to the Butler, Pennsylvania rally with an AR-15-style rifle. In unprecedented scenes of terror, Trump was seen grabbing his ear and dropping to the ground as Crooks’ gunshots rang out and sent the crowd into a frenzy . Moments later, he got up and raised his fist and shouted ‘fight, fight, fight’ as the Secret Service escorted him to a motorcade and then to hospital. Crooks’ uncle Mark Crooks told the Daily Mail he hadn’t seen the gunman or his parents in years, and described them as ‘very private’.
‘I haven’t seen that part of my family in years,’ he said. ‘Honestly it’s been so long I don’t think much about them ‘It’s a shame. The kid is like a stranger to me. They’re private and they don’t reach out to anybody any time.’ Bethel Park School District – where Crooks was a student until two years ago – verified his graduation and vowed full cooperation with investigators. After weeks of erratic behavior, he told his parents he was headed to the gun range, a hobby that he had recently picked up.
Instead, he mounted a roof and shot the then Republican presidential candidate at a rally from just 400 feet away. The bullet scraped Trump’s ear and killed one attendee in the crowd behind him. He was located by Secret Service and killed on the scene. Residents who lived close to Crooks told the Daily Mail his family were quiet and kept to themselves. Crooks’ motivation for the assassination attempt remains unknown.
The president’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, said that no-one in her family has been briefed about what happened or what investigators think could have triggered it. ‘None of us have been briefed,’ she told commentator Benny Johnson on Monday. Speaking about Trump, she added: ‘He doesn’t want to think or know more about it. He boxes it away.. So he can focus on taking this country back.’
