EThekwini employee caught drinking with ‘friends’ in municipal vehicle

The eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that the Durban Solid Waste (DSW) employee who was driving a municipal car filled with alcohol will be charged with misconduct and for bringing the city into disrepute.

A video of the employee has been doing the rounds on social media. In the video, bottles of alcohol can be seen in both the front and back seats as well as individuals drinking the alcohol. The incident happened on Monday, 21 March 2022

The video was captured by a local crime watch group at a beach in Amanzimtoti, South of Durban. Several opened bottles of Castle Lager and Savannah could be seen inside the vehicle.

EThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela condemned the incident.

Mayisela said municipal vehicles are solely used to help the city to discharge its basic responsibilities for the benefit of all its stakeholders.

“As a result, the driver of a vehicle is going to be charged for misconduct and for putting the city into disrepute. The city appeals to anyone seeing any unbecoming behaviour by our employees to alert the organisation,” Mayisela said.

A number of residents took to social media to express their disappointment with the municipal worker’s act, especially considering the fact that it was a public holiday and the worker was going to get double pay.

”The same people who misuse and abuse our rates and taxes they are not held responsible for their actions. They can do what they want an be at work tomorrow with no consequences for their actions. Ruin lives,” Margaret Smith said

“This is how they misuse state property and petrol. NO state vehicle should not be taken home on a weekend for private use,” Annatjie Kloppers said.

“The union will defend them and they will be promoted, that’s how it works with them,” Brian Halsall said.
