WASHINGTON (TND) — European Union Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Thierry Breton on Monday sent a letter to X owner Elon Musk, demanding he comply with European Union law ahead of his interview with former President Donald Trump.
Musk will air his “live conversation” with Trump via X Monday night, which he has encouraged users to submit questions for. Trump marked the occasion by reviving his X account with a series of posts promoting the event.
Breton in his letter acknowledged the upcoming interview and urged Musk to remember the Digital Services Act, a European Union regulation addressing online disinformation hate speech. As the owner of a site with a large European presence, Breton said, Musk is compelled to moderate X to comply with regulation.
“DSA obligations apply without exceptions or discrimination to the moderation of the whole user community and content of X (including yourself as a user with over 190 million followers) which is accessible to EU users and should be fulfilled in line with the risk-based approach of the DSA, which requires greater due diligence in case of a foreseeable increase of the risk profile”, Breton wrote.
My services and I will be extremely vigilant to any evidence that points to breaches of the DSA and will not hesitate to make full use of our toolbox, including by adopting interim measures, should it be warranted to protect EU citizens from serious harm,” he added.
When responding to the letter via X Monday afternoon, Musk included a meme instructing the reader to “take a big step back.”
Musk has previously engaged in a very public spat with Breton over the way he moderates the site. Breton in July alleged the site’s blue checkmark system is intended to deceive users, which violates DSA.
“We look forward to a very public battle in court, so that the people of Europe can know the truth,” Musk replied.
“Be our guest @elonmusk,” Breton fired back. “There has never been — and will never be — any “secret deal”. With anyone.”
