EUREKA, Calif. — A silent vigil took place Wednesday in Old Town Eureka to demand an arms embargo on Israel while calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as well as Lebanon.
The vigil was organized by the Humboldt Committee for Peace and Justice, aiming to honor the 16,000 children who lost their lives during the conflict in the region.
The vigil concluded in front of Congressman Huffman’s office in Old Town Eureka.
The participants were silent for 2 hours and 12 minutes, each half second represents a child lost in the last year. Emphasizing the scale of the tragedy along with the dire need for international intervention.
“I would really love to see Congressman Huffman here face to face with us, having a conversation with us and really understanding why we are here and that this is because we care so deeply about these children, we care deeply about humanity, and we feel that the level of diplomacy required to stop this conflict is not happening,” said Humboldt Committee for Peace and Justice Organizer and Member, Marika Ennis.
Congressman Jared Huffman was not present as expected, but his representative handed out a letter from the Congressman that said:
“…from the many conversations I have had with you and others who share your concerns over the past year, I know that we have some fundamental disagreements about some aspects of this terrible conflict in the Middle East. But I believe we also have points of agreement. Starting with our mutual distress and dismay over the horrific suffering and loss of innocent lives we continue to see on all sides.”
Congressman Huffman also stated while he supports the right of Israel to exist and protect itself against threats. He has strong disagreements with the current Israeli government over its response to last year’s Hamas terrorist attack and its inadequate concern for innocent lives and humanitarian needs.
