European Council plans double online summit

EU heads of state and government will convene via videoconference on the afternoon of February 25 to discuss the coronavirus pandemic, European Council President Charles Michel announced Wednesday.

The leaders will then reconvene for a second summit the following morning focused on security, defense and the EU’s “southern neighborhood” — a reference to relations with countries in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as to issues in the Mediterranean Sea.

In December, the European Council issued conclusions describing its goals for improving political dialogue throughout the southern neighborhood region, and to work to address issues related to Libya’s ongoing civil war. Officials said the aim of the online summit is for leaders to hold a fuller debate on the region.

Michel has been convening leaders via videoconference regularly to maintain cooperation and consultation in the pandemic response, and at this month’s session they are expected to discuss recent difficulties in the EU’s vaccine strategy.
