A special court in Pakistan Tuesday granted interim bail to the wife of former prime minister Imran Khan in a £190m graft case on Tuesday.
The development comes months after a two-member Islamabad High Court Bench approved the bail of Khan in the same case, reported Geo TV.
Bushra Bibi was accused alongside Khan in the case in which the couple was accused of receiving financial help from a land developer in setting up an educational institution, Al Qadir University.
However, his spouse will stay in prison as she is also serving a sentence after her marriage to Khan was ruled unlawful.
Last week, their appeal dismissed by a Pakistan court to suspend their sentences in an illegal marriage case.
The case dates back to February 3, when an Islamabad court convicted the couple just days before the general elections on February 8. The conviction stemmed from a complaint filed by Bushra Bibi’s ex-husband, Khawar Fareed Maneka.
Khan and his party say the charges were politically motivated to thwart his return to power.
In recent months, Pakistani courts have suspended Khan’s jail sentences for two cases about the illegal acquisition and sale of state gifts, while overturning his conviction on charges of leaking state secrets.
The former cricket superstar is fighting dozens of other cases that continue.
