Explained: How India and Pakistan senior teams could play 6 matches against each other in 2023

Meetings between India and Pakistan have been increasingly rare of late, but the men’s senior teams could face each other up to six times in the remainder of 2023. India and Pakistan last played an ODI against each other more than four years ago in the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The excitement and buzz surrounding the ongoing ACC Men’s Emerging Asia Cup final between India and Pakistan has only raised expectations about the atmosphere that will be present when the senior teams go head-to-head. Matches between the two sides have become increasingly rare as they no longer meet in bilateral competition and their matchups are restricted to multinational tournaments.

To understand how few matches there are between the neighboring nations, the last time they played an ODI match against each other, no one even knew of the existence of COVID-19. It was during the 2019 World Cup (June 16, 2019) that India and Pakistan last played a 50+ match against each other.

However, there could be up to five ODIs between the two sides before the end of the World Cup 2023 . The two sides could meet three times in the 2023 Asian Cup. rohit sharma and the teams led by Babar Azam are in the same group for the continental main event. They are set to play once and unless Nepal pulls off a big upset, they will meet again in the Super 4 stage on September 10. If both teams reach the final, there could be as many as three India-Pakistan matchups in the tournament.

Similarly, the two sides are scheduled to play each other in the Round Robin stage of the World Cup 2023 on October 15 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. If both sides reach the round of 16, there could be another semi-final meeting at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens or the final in Ahmedabad.

Apart from these five ODI meetings, there is likely to be a sixth instance where the teams face each other at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. This will be in the T20I format with a second team for both teams due to a clash with the World Cup. The four best ranked teams will qualify directly for the quarterfinals, which means they will not play in the group stage. This means that only one India-Pakistan match is possible, which is likely to be in the semi-final or final.
