An explosion rocked the Bemis Park neighborhood of Omaha at noon Monday, causing extensive damage to one of the historic homes in the area near 31st and Cuming streets. Much of the side of the house was gone as smoke began to clear in the area. The Omaha Fire Department said no one was injured in the blast. The neighbors were incredulous when they witnessed what happened. Elissa Larson lives next door to the house that exploded. She said that she heard a loud crash but that she didn’t think of anything until she saw her windows smashed and on fire. She then she grabbed her children and got out of her. “I was mainly trying to stay calm for the girls, but I was worried that our house would catch fire as well,” Larson said. The explosion took place just after noon and investigators at the scene were concentrating on the possibility that a gas leak was the cause. The Metropolitan Public Service District said the case is under investigation. Crews shut off gas service to the home after the explosion. “We were walking our dogs about a block in that direction … and Kay smelled gas,” said another neighbor, Daniel Mathers. Mathers and his wife, Kay Burdwell, say they called the MUD emergency hotline. “They said ‘Don’t worry about it, we’re clearing the lines in the area, we’ll get back to you,'” Burdwell said. Less than half an hour later, Burdwell said she heard fire trucks coming down the street. house and everything in it,” Burdwell said. It took the Omaha Fire Department about an hour to put out the fire caused by the explosion. MUD said it is cooperating with the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office and OFD in their investigations.A spokesman declined requests from KETV NewsWatch 7 for an interview.
