The high court instructions came while he was hearing a hate speech case.
“Hate speech is a serious crime that affects the fabric of the nation, goes to the heart of our republic and the dignity of the people,” Judge KM Joseph said.
“We are very clear, our order was independent of religion. We only had the public good in mind when we passed the suo motu action order against hate speech. Let it not get out of hand, ”he added.
Last month, the high court said hate speech is a “vicious circle” and will end the moment politics and religions separate and politicians stop using religion in politics.
A bench of judges KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna said that fringe elements are making hate speech and people should refrain from doing so.
“A big problem arises when politicians mix politics with religion. The moment politics and religion are segregated, this will end. When politicians stop using religion, all of this will stop. We have also said in our recent verdict that mixing politics with religion is dangerous for democracy,” Judge Joseph said.
The high court’s remarks came as it heard a contempt petition against several state authorities, including Maharashtra, for failing to register FIRs against those who make such speeches.
