Sufficient security measures have been put in place around Jantar Mantar in Delhi, following an alleged altercation between the protesting wrestlers and a group of policemen at the protest site on Wednesday night.
According to the sources, a strong police force has been deployed on the spot and the entire area has been entrenched.
Let’s look at some of the updates in the case.
‘Kill us if you want, you will not tolerate disrespect’: Vinesh Phogat
Shocked and appalled by the rude behavior of the Delhi police towards the protesting fighters on Wednesday night, Vinesh Phogat said they were not criminals and did not deserve such disrespect.
The fighters have been sitting in protest since April 23, demanding the arrest of WFI Chairman Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, alleging that he has sexually harassed seven female fighters, including a minor.
Medical check against claim of ‘intoxication’ charge
DCP Tayal further said that the wrestlers have been asked to file a complaint and that the policeman who was accused of “drunkenness” will be medically checked.
“We have told the wrestlers to complain about their grievances and we will take appropriate action… A medical check is underway on the policeman they have filed complaints about…” the DCP said.
The wrestlers have alleged that they were roughed up by drunken Delhi Police personnel when they wanted to bring mattresses to sleep on for the night after the all-day rain.
Delhi Police version of Scuffle
Delhi police said on Thursday supporters of the fighters turned aggressive after they were prevented from taking camp beds at the protest site, which they were not allowed to do, leading to chaos.
“Cold beds were brought to the protest site in Jantar Mantar. Since there was no permit, we did not allow it, so some of the supporters of the protesting fighters tried to take the beds out of the truck and this caused an altercation,” said DCP Pranav Tayal.
MP Deepender Hooda detained, Swati Maliwal ‘arrested’
Police detained Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda, while Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal was arrested after arriving at the venue to support the wrestlers. Some 15 other people have also been detained on a bus.
Some people raised slogans of ‘jai jawan jai kisan’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’.AAP Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj also arrived at the scene
AAP Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj was also among those who had come to the site to show support for the country’s top fighters, including Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat, among others, who have been protesting here since April 23 against the boss of wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Uttar Pradesh Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on charges of sexual harassment.
Night fight between wrestler and policemen
A fight had allegedly broken out between the protesting fighters and some police personnel at the Jantar Mantar here, resulting in head injuries to a couple of protesters.
The wrestlers have alleged that they were mistreated by police personnel.
Four people, including Congress leader Deepender Hooda and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti, were detained after the incident, police said.
AAP decided to provide cots to protesting fighters
In light of unusual rains in the capital, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will hand out cots to wrestlers protesting in Jantar Mantar to demand the arrest of the head of the wrestling federation on sexual harassment charges.
Rains lashed the national capital on Wednesday, flooding low-lying areas and disrupting vehicular movement on key highways.
Video shows protesters accusing police officers of mistreatment
In a video circulating on social media platforms, some protesters can be heard accusing police personnel of attacking two wrestlers under the influence of alcohol. In the video, the accused police officer is seen sitting down, while the protesters allege that his colleagues were silent bystanders.
