The wave was located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and was producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms Thursday. It was moving to the west at 15 to 20 mph.
A tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to develop several hundred miles east of the Winward Islands.
The chance of formation over the next 48 hours is 60%.
If it becomes a tropical storm, it will take the name Beryl, the second name in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season list.
Forecasters watch second area in Gulf of Mexico
The National Hurricane Center said a broad area of low pressure over the Western Caribbean Sea is producing widespread, disorganized showers and thunderstorms as it moves west-northwest at about 15 mph.
Some development is possible over the northwestern Caribbean Sea or over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico over the next few days. But the center placed its chances of development into at least a tropical depression at just 30 percent over the next seven days.
