Flames engulf Haiti nationwide jail as chaos reigns in Port-au-Prince

Flames erupted inside Haiti’s nearly empty nationwide penitentiary in Port-au-Prince on Thursday, including to the chaos already engulfing the capital.

Reside video of thick black smoke billowing out from the jail was broadcast on nationwide tv.

A spokesperson for the nationwide police confirmed to NBC Information that there was a hearth on the jail however provided no additional remark.

It wasn’t instantly clear who began the blaze.

The poverty-stricken Caribbean nation is being rocked by social and political turmoil as unpopular Prime Minister Ariel Henry introduced earlier this week that he is stepping down.

Henry has been in Puerto Rico most of this month, leaving an influence vacuum that a number of gangs and armed teams have been preventing over, together with one being led by Jimmy Chérizier — a former police officer-turned-gangster who goes by nickname “Barbeque.”

Henry has stated he would resign and his authorities would dissolve as soon as a transitional council had been arrange.

The prime minister’s phrases stand in stark distinction to the scene of armed teams, roaming the streets of Port-au-Prince in current days with little resistance from authorities.

Earlier this month, almost all the prisoners escaped from the now-burning jail when gunmen stormed the ability.
